Howdy,
I go to a family camp every year in Mendocino area. The camp is the first week of August. I would love to this year bring up a bunch of un-decorated hoops and a bunch of tape and make it a shared activity to deco and play with the hoops. I'm thinking I'd want to bring about 25 hoops of varying size (there will be both kids and adults there).
My questions to you good people.
1. Do I have enough time to order supplies and receive them before the 1st of August in San Francisco?
2. The camp is in the redwoods and I'd hate to leave toxic plastic shavings and sandings all around there...can (should) I pre-cut and pre-sand the hoops? I'd prefer to actually put them together up there, I think (because that much tubing has got to be easier to transport laying flat). If I wasn't worried about toxicity, I'd just leave the tubing in coils until I got up there.
3. How much tape am I gonna need for 25 hoops? I know there's a lot of variation in the amount people use to deco, but let's say just basic spiral coverage of basic (42 to 36 inch) hoops made with 3/4" tubing.
Thanks in advance for your expertise. I'm sure I could learn all about this through trial and error...but I don't have a lot of time to gain the experience before I have to place the orders for these supplies.

Re: Need Supplies...Hoops for Camp
Thu, July 3, 2008 - 11:33 AMI order most of my tape from Identi-tape and they are located in Colorado, so even with cheap ground shipping my orders always get here within a week. How much tape you need depends on what kind of designs you plan to do, but for the simple design you plan to do, I'd say 2-3 rolls of 2" gaffer tape as the base should be more than enough (but still give everyone variety in their color selection and having more than one roll will allow more than one person to make hoops at the same time) and then if you want to save money, get a bunch of cheap 3/4" vinyl tape in a different colors. Depending on the angle of your spiral, you can make 2-4 hoops with each roll of vinyl tape.
I don't sand my hoops, so I don't know what to tell you about pre-sanding, but I can tell you that one coil of 400' tubing takes up WAY less space than all the hoops I end up making with that same coil. Even a 100' coil takes up less space than the 8-10 hoops that come out of it. I do think it will be slightly more efficient to prep all the tubing beforehand (especially if you heat the ends before inserting the connectors), but if you're short on space (and strong!) you can bring the coil and then cut and connect there. If you want to prep before going, you can always tie all the hoops to the top of the car. Since you're making some 42" and some 36", you can put the smaller ones inside and your stack won't be quite as large as if you had 25 hoops all lying on top of each other.
Good luck! -

Re: Need Supplies...Hoops for Camp
Thu, July 3, 2008 - 2:08 PMOkay...so if I'm making an Identi-tape order (which I'm happy to do, btw)...any chance you can point me to the "right" tapes to buy? I've looked at their catalog and even with them grouping the hooping tapes together...its daunting. Happy to talk by phone (Natasha) :-). -

Re: Need Supplies...Hoops for Camp
Thu, July 3, 2008 - 3:57 PMOn the main page, look under gaffer, then click on 2" tape for the background stripe. Once you have picked out your colors and added them to the cart, go back to the main page and look under vinyl for the accent stripe. You can get 3/4" or 1" (just personal preference). You can also look under wire harness tape (which is also vinyl) but it's much thinner than the regular vinyl tape so I only use wire harness tape for colors I can't get in regular vinyl (like pink). You can also use 1" gaffer tape for the accent stripe, but it's more expensive.
For beginner hoops, I use 3/4" 160psi tubing. I bought a cheapie PVC cutter at Home Depot but it started getting really hard to use after the blade got dull. I ended up buying a ratcheting PVC cutter that was more expensive but WAY easier to use. I also bought a heat gun at Lowe's or HD. It's in the paint section of the store and I think it was around $20.
If you have more questions, feel free to call me!

Re: Need Supplies...Hoops for Camp
Thu, July 3, 2008 - 12:13 PMHi Danese,
If you buy a PVC cutter (around $12) you won't need to sand. Invest in one of these, trust me! I would transport your tubing in its original coil and construct your hoops at camp. I have a heating tool that I bought at Michael's for $25 which works perfectly for this project - it's usually used for embossing, so look in the paper crafts section. Just cut your tubing, heat one end, slide in the connector, heat the other end, make your circle, let it cool slightly, enforce with duct tape and you're done! I found my tubing and PVC cutter at Lowes in Livermore...if you can make the trip out there you may be able to avoid shipping costs and waiting time.
Have fun!

Re: Need Supplies...Hoops for Camp
Thu, July 3, 2008 - 2:09 PMGreat tip about the cutter...I'll definitely get one of those. And I guess I'll be driving out to Livermore. What diameter and PSI did you buy?
