November Info

Hey Hoopers -

Sorry for the delay. Antonio and I were hoping to have more info for you all regarding our move into Cellspace for the winter season, but haven't gotten things finalized as of yet. We might be moving our standard time to Saturday afternoons to make it happen, not quite sure yet, but things sound promising in terms of having a roof over our heads for the winter. I'll keep you posted.

In the meantime, this Sunday we'll be meeting up at Precita Park, routinely on the warmer side of San Francisco, from 2 to 4 pm. The park is located on Precita Ave between Folsom & Alabama Streets - which is located between the Mission and Bernal Heights neighborhoods close to Cesar Chavez. Hope to see you there.

To ensure that our space remains clean, please use only approved hoops during the hoop jam. Thank you!

October Hooping Calendar

Hey Hoopers -

Happy October and here's our hooping calendar for the month:

Saturday, October 3rd: SF LOVEVOLUTION: The San Francisco LovEvolution Parade and Festival is happening this Saturday and this event, formerly known as LoveFest and The Love Parade, is one of my favorite days of the entire day. Bay Area Hoopers will once again be leading the parade just as we have been since it began. We'll be meeting at 2nd and Market at 11:45 am and the parade starts at 12 noon. Our color theme this year is red and pink so wear something red, or something pink, or something red and pink. The parade is free, while admittance into the festival this year is $10. http://www.sflovevolution.org

Sunday, October 4th: DOLORES PARK: Because it's been awhile since we've had our regular hoopjam and we won't be having one next weekend, we're having a double dose of hooping this weekend. Bay Area Hoopers will be hosting our Sunday afternoon hoopjam from 2 to 4pm in Dolores Park. We'll be meeting up on the Dolores Street side of the park between 19th and 20th. See you there!

Sunday, October 11th: BURNING MAN DECOMPRESSION: Burning Man meets the pavement here in San Francisco. Yep, it's time once again for the Heat The Street Faire. The event runs for noon to midnight, but to create a greater hooping presence we will be meeting at 2:00 inside the main public entrane at 19th and Minnesota. If you haven't been to Burning Man it's a great chance to see what the fuss is about. If you have been but you didn't go this year it's a good chance to see what you might have missed within the twelve hours of art, performance, fire, dance theme camps, circus arts, marching bands, DJS, Burning Man 2008 imagery and more! And if you went to Burning Man this year you can relive the adventure! Dress up regardless. It's $10 in playa wear/costume, and $20 in streetwear so Participate! More info: http://tinyurl.com/l4x7ul

Sunday, October 18th: SUNSET PARTY in GOLDEN GATE PARK. It's the final Sunset Party of the season with more details coming closer to the date featuring DJs Galen, J-Bird, Solar
+ Special Guests. Free. Noon to 7pm.

Sunday, October 25th: HAYES GREEN - We'll be meeting up from 2 to 4pm at the Hayes Street Green, officially called "Patricia's Green" at Octavia Street between Hayes and Fell.

Happy Hooping!
Mindful Hooping Class Today! (9/29)

Hi!

The first Mindful Hooping class is tonight, between 6:30 p.m. - 7:30 p.m. The class is located at the Prop Box in Oakland: Address 925 45th Ave, Oakland, CA.

This location is super easy to get to via public transportation (BART and walking or biking) or by car.

The intent of this class is to increase our mind-body connectivity via the hoop and we will have the added benefit of working on increasing our emotional capacity for self-compassion which therefore increases our emotional resilience to stress from life disappointments and what not.

I hope to make this class a permanent Tuesday night thing, so even if you don't do it this week; Think about coming next week.

Price is a suggested donation of $15-$20 per class but if you only have $1-$10 you will not be turned away.

Please send me an email or message if you have questions.

Monday Night Indoor Hoop Jams by Donation, Berkeley

Hi Everyone :)

I'm experimenting with the idea of hosting a few Monday night hoop jams at Studio 12 in Berkeley (2525 8th Street). Starting on 9/21, I will be hosting these jams "by donation" just to cover the cost of the space rental. At this moment, I have the space from 8:00-9:15, but if enough people tell me that they will be there, I will ask the owner to extend our time.

The only hitch is that the space is PRISTINE, so only non-marking hoops will be allowed in the space. I will provide a wide variety of hoops (different sizes, different tubing) for use in the studio, but know that you might not be able to use your "favorite" hoop in the space. LED hoops with non-marking tape or no tape are welcome.

Let me know if you'd be interested, so I can get to work on extending our time :)

Thanks,
Nicole

September Hooping Calendar

Hello Hoopers!

Thanks for making World Hoop Day amazing here in San Francisco. There were easily hundreds of people that turned out over the course of the day at the San Francisco Civic Center. Extra special thanks to Rich Porter, Christabel Zamor, Miss Rosie, Nicole Wong, Marjorie Schwartz and HoopTiger for teaching during the day too. And let's not forget our special guests visiting from France, New York, Baltimore, Montreal, Philadelphia, Austin and more. It was truly an incredible day. View my photos here: http://www.flickr.com/photos/philohagen/sets/72157622326256692/

And now, it's Festival Season again!

Saturday, September 12, 2009: POWER TO THE PEACEFUL Bay Area Hoopers will once again be making our way to the Power To The Peaceful Festival at Speedway Meadow in Golden Gate Park. The full day event this year includes performances by Michael Franti + Spearhead, an acoustic set by Alanis Morissette, Sly & Robbie, and more - with DJs Miguel Migs, Ren the Vinyl Archeologist, DJ Zita, and DJ Adnan.. It's free! Speedway Meadow is on the west (ocean) side of 19th Avenue. More info: http://powertothepeaceful.org/

Sunday, September 13, 2009: PANHANDLE Bay Area Hoopers will be hosting a Sunday afternoon hoopjam from 2 to 4 pm at the end of the Panhandle in San Francisco. That's specifically located at Baker Street between Oak and Fell.

Sunday, September 20, 2009: SUNSET PARTY: We're going back to Novato when Pacific Sound presents an afternoon with djs Solar, J-Bird, & Galen + special guests at Stafford Lake Park in Marin County. Northern Marin can get hot this time of year too so we won't have to worry about the fog. Bring a blanket, a sack lunch, etc. While we'll keep our standard 2 to 4pm hooping hours, the music starts at noon and goes til sunset. The full day event is free to the public, although parking is $8 a vehicle so carpooling is recommended. Have a ride? Need a ride? Try posting in the Bay Area Hoopers group in the Hooping.org Forums or on our Facebook group. Stafford Lake: http://www.co.marin.ca.us/depts/pk/main/pos/pdstaffordlke.cfm

Sunday, September 28th, 2008: FOLSOM STREET FAIR. If you're not going to HoopCamp and it's sold out (http://hoopcampretreats.com/) then get your black and blue on for Folsom Street Fair. The annual street fair that is NOT for kids will be going all day and any sort of leather and fetish wear is encouraged. BAH is meeting up at 12th and Folsom to enter the fair at 2pm sharp and be on time as it's very difficult to find each other in the crowds otherwise. More info: http://folsomstreetfair.org/fair-info.php

MARK YOUR CALENDARS FOR EARLY OCTOBER:

Saturday, October 3rd: SF LOVEVOLUTION: Mark your calendar for the San Francisco LovEvolution Parade and Festival. Bay Area Hoopers has been leading the parade since it began. This year the Love Parade and LoveFest has evolved into LovEvolution. The parade is free, while admittance into the festival this year is $10. Easily one of the best days of the year in San Francisco. http://www.sflovevolution.org

Sunday, October 4th: DOLORES PARK: Bay Area Hoopers will be hosting our Sunday afternoon hoopjam from 2 to 4pm in Dolores Park. We'll be meeting up on the Dolores Street side of the park between 19th and 20th. See you there!

Sunday, October 11th: BURNING MAN DECOMPRESSION: http://www.burningman.com/blackrockcity_yearround/special_events/decompression/decom2009.html
New Hoop Class -- Mindful Hooping!

Hey there!

I've been on hiatus but I'm glad to be back with a new hoop class called Mindful Hooping.

What is Mindful Hooping?

Its hooping.
Its meditation.

Its hooping and mediation!

The intent of this class is to use guided meditation techniques to increase mind-body connectivity in 2 ways.

In sports, meditation has been shown to reduce mental and physical anxiety caused by performance expectations while increasing concentration. Like in sports, in this class meditation will be used to quiet our minds and aid hoop flow. And by using ideas from Psychology/Buddhism we will also focus on increasing our emotional vitality to stress caused by daily living.

The class features lots of stretching, some hoop drills, and some movement exercises in addition to meditating. So it is preferable that you be able to hoop at the waist with some ease. If you are new to breathing meditation, no worries; instructions will be given in class.

Currently I am only doing this twice a month (its an experiment), so sign up now! If this class becomes popular I create more opportunities for people to participate.

Price is a suggested donation of $15-$20 per class but if you only have $1-$10 you will not be turned away.

Please send me an email or message if you want to attend a class or have questions.

Mindful Hooping
2050 Bryant St
San Francisco, CA 94110

Classes 9/15 and 9/29
5:30 p.m. - 6:30 p.m.

P.S. I am still offering "Hula-Hoop Basics Class: Waist" classes. If you're bummed that you can't hoop well enough to take Mindful Hooping yet, or just think you can't hoop, this is the class to take. We'll go over the basics of waist hooping and moving with the hoop; plus you'll also learn some tricks. And, we'll also do some troubleshooting for when that d%$m hoop just keeps falling.

Classes are for 9/12 and 9/26
Time and Location: TBD

About me:
I'm a hoop performer with two years of experience. I've performed at Mighty, Club Cocomo, and other popular venues in the Bay Area in addition to The Crucible's Fire Arts Festival and Temple of Poi's Union Square performance.

I look forward to helping you find your hoop flow.
Symbiosis Gathering anyone? Help please?

any hoopers going to symbiosis gathering? sept 17th--21st? http://symbiosisgathering.com/2009/ my boyfriend justin and i are coming (and volunteering) and we're super excited! when we had bought the plane tickets originally, we had thought that maybe we'd be able to hook up with one of justin's friends, or a friend of a friend, but they'll be out of town.

my boyfriend and i are flying into san fransisco from rochester ny. we have been trying to get a ride from the airport on the symbiosis rideshare boards, but we haven't had success yet. anyone going to this who has room for two of us? we're packing pretty minimally, and since my led hoop is collapsible, i've decided to bring regular collapsibles instead of checking a few favorites (as i had originally planned, it'll just be easier this way)

we'll each have one small/medium suitcase, and we'll be able to fit what we're bringing in that. bare minimum. no sleeping bags. thin blaknkets, sleeping in warm clothes. tent is really small folded up. hoops will be in with my clothes. so basically, if you have seating room in your car from san fransisco, but your worried about adding two more people's gear, don't stress! we're prepared to hug our packs on our laps the whole few hours there.

our other option would be renting a car, and hopefully grabbing two people from the rideshare list who want to throw down on that... but money's tight, and between the rental and the gas i have a feeling that is going to be pricey. the car rental makes me leary because whenever i have to put something big on my card that's intended to be split with other people later, something usually happens and in the end, it's more expensive that it was supposed to be

ideally, we'd like to get a ride from a local. all we need is butt space! gas money for sure! a convenience fee? whatever you want, we'll work it out! we're very nice and good company in the car. if you can help us out, message me on here, and we can talk more in detail. we'd really appreciate it! i'm very excited for the trip. if you have any doubts about picking up two randoms at the airport, please feel free to contact me and talk to me more. get a feel for what we're all about!

thanks folks! i got my fingers crossed still! and justin tells me that craigslist might blow up after burning man. so that's a possibility, but it makes me nervous to not have these things arranged very far in advance.... we'll see....
hope to hear from someone! thanks again

I talked to the friendly folks at the Ace Ellis Hardware on MLK in Oakland, and they said they would be willing to carry 3/4" 100 psi irrigation tubing and connectors. I told them I was tired of driving out to Dublin's Lowes to get it. I was wondering 1) what else local hoopmakers might like them to supply, and 2) how to get the word out that they are a good place to go locally for hoop supplies. Any ideas?

August Hooping Calendar

Hey Hoopers -

Here's your August Hooping Calendar for Bay Area Hoopers:

Sunday, August 2nd: GOLDEN GATE PARK - The Dirty Bird Party is happening hosted by Dirty Bird Records from 2 to 6pm in Golden Gate Park. Where exactly? Enter the park at 25th Avenue from Lincoln or Fulton Street and follow the sound. A little more info: http://www.yelp.com/biz/dirty-bird-party-in-the-park-san-francisco

Sunday, August 9th: ESPRIT PARK - On the sunniest side of San Francisco we should have a beautiful fog free day of hooping from 2 to 4 pm. Those of you who have attended Burning Man Decompression know the area, but while it's a little out of the way, it's a great spot for hooping with better weather, lots of lawn, redwoods, and convenient to the T-Third rail line. Esprit Park is located between 20th and 22nd Streets and Indiana and Tennessee Streets.

Sunday, August 16th: PATRICIA'S GREEN - We'll be hooping at the Hayes Street Green, officially named "Patricia's Green" at Hayes and Octavia Streets in San Francisco. We'll be there from 2 to 4pm.

Sunday, August 23rd: SNOW PARK - We'll be back in the East Back at Snow Park in Oakland, California, for a great day of hooping. We've been having great East Bay turnouts here and it's a great place to hoop on come on out and join us. We'll be there from 2 until 4pm and it's just a short walk from the 19th St. BART Station at 19th & Harrison. Park info: http://www.oaklandnet.com/parks/parks/snow.asp

Sunday, August 30th: DOLORES PARK - We'll be hooping in San Francisco's Dolores Park in our usual spot. It's on the Dolores Street side of the park between 19th and 20th Streets. Occasionally another group beats us to the place so if we're not right there look for the hoops somewhere nearby. We'll be hooping from 2 to 4pm.

and don't forget to mark your calendars:

WEDNESDAY 9/9/9: WORLD HOOP DAY 2009 with nine hours of activities at the San Francisco Civic Center from 12 noon until 9pm.

Happy Hooping!

Saturday, June 25th. Hoop Class Basics, Waist

Hi!

Just a reminder that I am holding a 1 p.m. hoop class in GGP, Saturday, July 25th. The class is limited to 10 people and I currently have 7 spots left.

The class will focus on teaching beginners how to hoop and helping struggling hoopers become better. The class will be filled with drills and exercises that will (hopefully) reinforce mind/body connection through hooping. I tend to stress openhearted fun, presentness, and connectivity with the hoop in my classes. I hope you'll join me for this class or any future classes I may offer (keep your eyes open).

To receive details about this class, please send me a ping on Tribe and also let me know if you would like to be on my mailing list. Or you can ping me just to put you on the mailing list.

I'm Samantha and I'm a 20yr old college student who just recently moved to the Santa Rosa area from the East Bay. I love to hoop with others and so far, haven't had the luck finding any hooper friends in this area, rats! Is there anyone here who lives in the area and is up for mid-morning hoop sessions in the Santa Rosa/Rhonert Park/Windsor/Peteluma area? =D I have extra hoops too!

July Hooping Calendar

Hello Beautiful Hoopers -

Here is our July Hooping Calendar!

Sunday July 12, 2009: PANHANDLE. Bay Area Hoopers are meeting from 2 to 4 pm at the end of the Panhandle, specifically at Baker Street between Fell and Oak in San Francisco.

Friday, July 19, 2009: SNOW PARK. We return to our favorite East Bay spot from 2 until 4pm. It's just a short walk from the 19th St. BART Station at 19th & Harrison for those that want to BART it too. Park info: http://www.oaklandnet.com/parks/parks/snow.asp

Sunday, July 26, 2009: DOLORES PARK. Bay Area Hoopers are meeting from 2 to 4 pm in Dolores Park in San Francisco. We're often near the palm trees between 19th and 20th on the Dolores Street side of the park, but sometimes that space is already being utilized so if we're not in our usual spot, look for us nearby.

Antonio and I haven't met up yet to look at the new sound system to see if it can be fixed, but the old one is still here so it looks like we'll be dragging it back out this month.

And don't forget to mark your calendars for World Hoop Day on September 9, 2009 - a full day of hoopiness!!!

if any of you in SF or nearby make or sell travel hoops, I am looking for someone who would like to barter a hoop for bodywork. I'm going to a festival July 24th and would like to have a hoop to take with me to keep me happy!

I live/work in SoMa and am proficient in Swedish and energy work. Have a fairly open schedule for the next few weeks, so if this is something you are up for, please send me a message how to contact you off tribe. Thankies!

June 27&28, Hula-Hoop Basics Class: Waist

Hey there,

I'm teaching two basic (waist hooping) classes this weekend. One for the East Bay peeps and the other for the SF peeps. All the details are here. http://tinyurl.com/lokmjs

I'm especially encouraging wallflowers, shy types, anti-socials, and just plain old "I never been able to hoop" whiners to join the class. So if you or someone you know fits one of these types, visit my sign-up page -- http://tinyurl.com/lokmjs, and register for the weekend class now.

And, for this weekend only, sign up with a friend and you save. The Sunday East Bay class ends at 1:30 and is near BART so you can easily hop a train and join up with BAH at Pride. And what could be better then being able to maintain your own thing with the rest?

Hope you join and even if you can't, maybe you'll want to sign up to know about possible future classes?

Start here!
http://tinyurl.com/lokmjs

All the best,
-Eds

Hey Hoopers,

There's no BAH gathering this Sunday given our broken sound system and the holiday. It's Fourth of July weekend and I know a lot of people including myself are not available this Sunday. Meanwhile, Antonio and I are still trying to get together to take the sound system apart to see if we can fix it and we haven't been able to meet up yet. For those of you who don't know, the sound system died last Sunday at Dolores Park and unfortunately it's definitely something internal - not the iPod dock as we expected. We bought the system via Amazon.com from a discount house to get us the best price in December and their 30 day return policy has expired, which then defers us to the manufacturer and before we look at trying to get Ion to fix it - who is based in the U.S. out of New Jersey, we're going to take a closer look and see if we can't get in there and give it a shot ourselves first.

In the meantime, have a hoopy holiday weekend and if you want people to join you, feel free to announce alternative gatherings here on the list.

Peace,
6/28: Pride Festival Hooping

Hey Hoopers -

This Sunday is a little different because it's San Francisco Pride Day (http://www.sfpride.org/) and we'll be gathering together for hooping at the Pride Festival after the parade as we have done in previous years. It's our annual hoop convergence at the San Francisco LGBT Pride Festival at the San Francisco Civic Center and it works a little differently in that we have specific meeting time which is 2pm at the Tantra Underground Dance Stage which is located this year on Hyde Street between Turk and Golden Gate. We'll rendezvous there at 2pm and probably about 2:20 or so will take off to make our way around to different stages - so plan to be there at 2pm or you may not be able to find us very well in the masses.

Because we'll definitely be having an audience wherever we go, costumes are definitely encouraged. Suggestions: Anything rainbow, pink or purple or fabulous!

Happy Hooping!

June Hooping Calendar

Hey Hoopers!

First off, a thank you to Choi and Marjorie for holding down the fort while I was away recently.

Here's what's coming up for the month of June!

Saturday, June 6th: Burning Man Precompression is happening showcasing artists, theme camps, performers and more. The theme is "evolution" in terms of costumes with dancing on two floors and an outside waterfront patio at Mission Rock Cafe, 817 Terry Francois Blvd, San Francisco. Take Mariposa Street to the Bay. Entrance is $15 in playa finery or with 3 cans of food donation, or $20 in street clothes without food to donate. Things kick off at 8pm and run until 4am, but don't stay out all night because:

Sunday, June 7th: Treasure Island
It's another PacificSound Sunset Party and this one is on Treasure Island with DJs Solar, Galen, J-Bird and surprise guests. The exact location hasn't been announced yet on Treasure Island, so call 415.820.1664 on Sunday for directions. The event is free and while it runs from 12 noon until 8:30pm, our official gathering hours at the Sunset Party are from 2 to 4 but come early and stay late.

Sunday, June 14th: Bay Area Hoopers is meeting up from 2 to 4pm at the Embarcadero (specifically the grassy block between Washington & Clay & Drumm & The Embarcadero streets). We'll be there from 2-4 pm so come on out!

Sunday, June 21st: We're celebrating Summer Solstice in Dolores Park, meeting up from 2 until 4 pm on the Dolores Street side of the park, typically by the palm trees between 19th and 20th.

Sunday, June 28th: It's our annual hoop convergence at the San Francisco LGBT Pride Festival at the San Francisco Civic Center. We'll be meeting at the Tantra Underground Dance Stage at 2pm sharp and most likely hooping all over the event. The specific stage location will be announced later this month.

Happy Hooping!

Hey hoopers,

I’m having a BBQ at my friend’s house on Treasure Island (on the water) after the Sunset party . So if you are hungry or just want to hang out with me and my friends, or hoop some more, stop on by! We also have a big screen with a WII, Playstation, and DJ booth, and views of the city, Alcatraz , Angel island, and GG bridge. The house has a huge capacity due to having a nice grassy area in behind it and will be very close(walking distance) to the actual Sunset party.

We will have 2 or 3 grills going and will also have a dedicated Veggie grill. We will have drinks, though feel free to bring your own food to grill and drinks. Or just bring your smiling face and chat with us! Things on the menu already include: hot dogs, chicken(drumsticks, breast, and thigh), steak, eggplant, zucchini, yellow squash, mushrooms, veggie burgers, tofu skewers, rice dish, appetizers, candy, and variety of drinks.

We will be passing out invites to our party during the Sunset party. Please give me a call if you do not get an invite and/or need directions to the party. 510-316-5299.

Looking forward to a great Sunset party weekend!

Sunday, May 24th: Celebrate Memorial Day Weekend at Snow Park in Oakland.
It's usually warmer in the East Bay so we're gonna take advantage of it! We've been having great East Bay turnouts here and we're all really liking hooping there so we're going back again. We'll be there from 2 until 4pm and it's just a short walk from the 19th St. BART Station at 19th & Harrison.

Hey Hoopers -

It's beautiful weather! Beautiful weather for fire hooping tomorrow night. Beautiful weather for coming out on Sunday afternoon.

Friday, May 15th: THE BAY AREA HOOPERS NON-HOOPING HOOPERS SOCIAL: We had our first non-hooping event for the holidays and the general consensus was let's do it again! We spend a lot of time hooping together, but hooping doesn't always allow us to get know each other that well when we're all off in our own groove, so come on over to my house this time and bring a dish to share with others. If you want an alcoholic beverage it's byob. Where? Philo's House at 432 Haight Street between Fillmore and Webster in the Lower Haight from 6:00 until 7:45pm. The doorbell is broken so write this down: 415.602.7798 in case the front gate gets closed so I can let you in.

Friday, May 15th: FIRE FRIDAY - Let's fire'em up at the AIDS Memorial Grove in Golden Gate Park. We'll be fire hooping and glow hooping from 8 until 10pm. If you haven't been to the grove before it can be a little confusing in the dark so just come to the potluck before hand and ride with someone out there. It's located at the intersection of Bowling Green and Middle Drive East - across from the tennis courts - large bolders with the name on it do an okay job of marking the trail down to the grove. Fire hooping is, of course, at your own risk.

Sunday, May 17th: Hayes Green
We're meeting up from 2 to 4 pm on Octavia between Fell and Hayes in San Francisco.

Friday, February 15th: FIRE FRIDAY - Let's fire'em up at the AIDS Memorial Grove in Golden Gate Park.

Park info: http://www.oaklandnet.com/parks/parks/snow.asp

Sunday, May 31st: Dolores Park
Come hoop it up from 2 to 4pm on the Dolores Street side of the park, typically by the palm trees between 19th and 20th.

Look forward to seeing you in the hoop this month!

Anybody have 1 1/2 inch hoop tubing I can buy???

Hey Hoopers!

I am involved with a fabulous circus and we are doing some performances this summer in which I will need a large hoop. I want to construct one large enough for two people to hoop in it at once..aka tandem hooping. We REALLY do not want to order the tubing of a website because the smallest amount it's sold in is 50ft quantities for $100. We will only need about 20ft of it. We've done an extensive search of home improvement stores, i.e. Home Depot, Lowes...and cannot find it available. Does anybody have or know of where we could get something appropriate that's not gunna bust our wallets???

Thanks!

anyone interested at performing some hoop tricks at a green event in Dolores Park on Saturday, April 25th from noon to 5 please call me at 925 323 5959 and let's get something arranged. I'd like to meet there an hour early to greet each other and get comfortable.

A spot next to the DJ has been arranged for us for this event. Also, if you've made any hoops or poi or anything green related, I believe we can bring these things and sell them as compensation for our entertainment. :)

Hope to get a good group together!

Hiii everyone!

Last weekend I was privileged enough to be able to escape into both the Mojave Desert AND Yosemite National Park with three of my favorite hoops. What a beautiful experience. If you haven't had the opportunity to hoop barefoot in the desert, I strongly suggest you do it soon! I wasn't able to take any videos during this trip (Ohhh rats!!) but I was able to get a few pretty shots of me doing my thing in the wild. I hope you all enjoy and possibly are inspired to get out of the town and enjoy yourselves and your hoops!

And they all can be viewed here, I can't quite figure out how to post a picture.

Torn inner thigh muscle and future precautions

Hello hoopers. I'm sad to announce my injury to the group. I have suffered a torn inner thigh muscle and a groin pull. I had written this response for my friends on Facebook. Take care and be careful out there!

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Dear friends,

Thank you all for your loving support. My desire to be the best I can be has lead me to this injury. This injury had occurred at last Sunday’s BAH meeting at Esprit park while performing a trick that I have done hundreds of time. I had been training hard for weeks, trying to put my body in top physical condition. Many of you may know, that I do bodybuilding and many other types of aerobics besides hula hooping. Combing them all together is a very hard mix on the body. And this injury had occurred due to my leg muscles being already stressed from doing squats and leg training in the gym, and then being out in the sun, not being properly hydrated, not stretching, and trying to do some of my jumping stunts. So I caution you all to take these precautions every time you exercise. Always remember to warm up your muscles, then stretch, and never let yourself become dehydrated, especially in the sun. Make sure you have water at bare minimum at all times and preferably a very good sports drink. And learn to see signs of overtraining – fatigue, soreness, irritability, injury, and a general washed out feeling.

I know, that maybe I have tried to push this group and the people involved with it and myself too hard . The same pressure I have put on myself , I had put on others. And I’m am greatly sorry if I had hurt anyone’s feelings in the process. I love this group with all my heart and sometimes I wake up and feel that, that is all I have left in my life. As many parts of my life outside of hooping has become dull and frustrating. I now know that I can let that go, and instead of trying so hard, I can learn to love myself more and grow more spiritually. I want the best for everyone and I do want to be a positive example for all of you. And I hope maybe I have touched some of your lives in a positive way. My healing may be long and painful, mentally, emotionally, and physically. But I will take this time to grow myself as a person. I feel very lonely at the moment, even with the sun shining on my face. Parts of my dreams has now been halted and I do not know how my condition will be after I recover.

For now, my therapist has told me that I can walk and that I won’t need surgery for this. So that is the good news. I will be going into therapy for a few weeks. I did feel a lot of pain right after the injury and the first night, it was very very hard to sleep. But I did not think it was a tear at the moment. My regular doctor saw me the following morning on Monday and did not see any discoloration. I started to notice a purple spot on my leg on Wednesday and on Thursday almost half of my inner thigh had turned purple. I went to see a therapist on Friday and that’s when the bad news occurred that the muscle was torn. Also I believe along with the torn muscle, I have a minor groin pull near the top of my leg. I was told it will take a couple weeks for this to heal and therapy would speed it up a bit and ensure proper healing. I can walk right now, but it is a bit of an awkward feeling.

So there is many lessons to be learn. Remember to warm up, stretch, drink plenty of fluids, and learn to see the signs of overtraining. Know that some of my tricks is not to tried by everyone. I do not teach many of my tricks in class, due to safety reason. Nor do I expect anyways else to be a leaping tiger. I’m trying to remain positive for now, and trying to be surrounded by my friends and family. I know you guys will carry the momentum of the group. I still will be coming to practice and am confident that Philo and many of you others will carry the momentum of this group on with love and pride!
Sunday Hooping (4/10) at Sunset Party

Hoopers one and all,

This Sunday we'll be joining the (re-scheduled) Sunset Party, at Stafford Lake park in Novato, 40 minutes north of SF.

It's a lovely grassy meadow next to a lake, with DJs spinning from Noon-8pm. The party itself is free, but the park charges $8 per car to enter. (See other thread for carpool arranging.)

Come whenever you like - just look for the hoops! Bring blankets, food, drinks, nitrous (just kidding!). It'll be half hoopin' and dancin'...and half BAH social outing.

DIRECTIONS: From Highway 101, take San Marin Drive to Novato Boulevard, to Novato Boulevard / Hicks Valley Road, then go west past the Stafford Lake Dam.

Lost? Call the Pacific Sound hotline:
It looks like it's not going to rain. Yay!

Sunday, March 8th: SNOW PARK (Oakland) - It's usually warmer in the East Bay so we're gonna take advantage of it! We've been having great East Bay turnouts at Snow Park in Oakland and we're all really liking hooping there so we're going back again. We'll be there from 2 until 4pm and it's just a short walk from the 19th St. BART Station at 19th & Harrison. Park info: http://www.oaklandnet.com/parks/parks/snow.asp

See you there,

Sunday, April 5th, 2009. Stafford Lake Park, Novato CA, Sunset party , 11am-7pm

Hello Hoopers,

If any of you didn't know, my hula hooping career started with the love of music and dance. And the first time I hula hooped with Bay Area Hoopers was at a Sunset party. So this weekend we will be joining the North Bay hoopers in combining hula hooping, dance, music, and fun at Stafford Lake Park in Novato for the season opener of the Sunset party!

If you need a ride, please arrange ahead of time. And feel free to send an email to other members stating that you need a ride. And please include where you are from and if you need a ride there and back or just a one way trip. Novato is located about 20mins north of San Francisco in Marin county. It is certainly a very beautiful spot to hula hoop.

Be forewarned that this weekend calls for RAIN in San Francisco. But I did check weather.com and it says Novato will be Partly Cloudy, yay! It is usually wamer in Novato but still gets chilly in the evening. So it would advised to bring something to keep you warm if you plan on staying till the end. Other helpful items are a beach towel to sit on, beer, margaritas, snacks, drinks, and your love and dancing legs!!

Use this link to find yourself directions or Google stafford lake park novato ,

http://maps.google.com/maps?hl=en&client=firefox-a&rls=org.mozilla:en-US:official&um=1&ie=UTF-8&cid=0,0,17791877522394572098&fb=1&split=1&gl=us&dq=stafford+lake+park+novato&daddr=Novato+Boulevard,+Uninc+Marin+County,+California,+USA&geocode=9417021090657145912,38.117110,-122.648620&ei=67jVSf6iIJeusQO32NyoCg&sa=X&oi=local_result&resnum=1&ct=directions-to

NO PETS ARE ALLOWED AT THE EVENT. Admission is free, but I believe there will be an $8-10 charge for parking. There is no specific time you need to come. Just keep an eye out for hoopers when you get there! I will mostly try to get there around 2-3pm with my group of friends.

And a special birthday wish to Steve Drew, Hoopdaddy. :D

See you all in the hoop!

I've been hooping for awhile now. Hooping is super fun, but I sometimes come across experiences i know can be improved. I finally put some ideas into tangible solutions and started a hoop shop.

The first products are cushy hoops that minimize practice bruises, Hoop racks that solve hoop storage issue, and fur hoops that offer a flashy alternative to funky outfits. Please see www.hoophut.etsy.com and let me know what you think, any inquiries, comments or suggestions are welcome. Thanks!

Hello Hoopers,

Well the smell of spring is really here! This weekend we will be at the Panhandle, specifically Baker Street between Oak and Fell at the statue.

Since we haven't hooped these past 2 weeks, I am extending our hooping meeting an extra hour this weekend! I've gotten emails from people who will be coming from farther distances this weekend, so I will be allowing more time for them to arrive and enjoy our hoop festivities.

I will most likely not need anyone else to be there at 2pm since I usually do find park very close by. But it is always helpful to have someone there with me in case I do not find nearby parking! :)

And please don't be afraid to come up to me and chat or amongst each other. :)

See you all there!

Hippie Hill is in Golden Gate Park by Sharon Meadow, near the main East entrance @ Haight and Stanyan. Always a party.

There are some events being put on by 'Green Zone Productions' and I was asked to get some hoopers organized to perform at a few of them. I believe they are in May, June & September but am not positive on the dates, I'm awaiting confirmation from Douglas, the founder of GZP.

Would anyone be down to meet up and practice some hooping and maybe perform at these events? I'll have more info over the next week or so.

Also, he said that for compensation we would be allowed to sell hoops or whatever other things we might make ourselves, I believe one or all of these events have vendor booths. Again with the "I'll have more info over the next week or so." lol

Just in case any of you haven't heard of this incredible event happening just a day's drive from you: The Northwest Hoop Gathering: The Evolution of Flow is happening in just two weeks up in beautiful Bend, OR! SF is repping heavily with Philo, Khan, Christabel & Rich all teaching, plus Baxter and myself (SF hoopers at heart < :), prima hoop madre Anah (Hoopalicious), and to top it all off the amazing Spiral. Phenomenal energy facilitator Candice of the SHiNE Portal <http://www.theshineportal.com/> will also be presenting a non-hooping workshop. I can't even express adequately how magical this gathering will be.

Mollie has decided to offer one- and two-day passes as well as the full three-day ticket. If you want to be completely submerged in hoopgnosis for 48 full hours, this event is not to be missed. Get a carpool together and join us! Here's the link for info & tix:

I just got to Sf. I know that pretty much everywhere else in the entire world you need to buy tape online. However, it occured to me that the bay area is a very special place and there are somethings available that maybe you can't find else where.

So. . .is there somewhere in the Bay Area where I can buy sparkly and sticky tape?

Past hoop meeting cancellations

Hello hoopers,

I have gotten many comments about us cancelling the last few hours before an event for the last 2 weeks. My apologies again. I will take the blame for this. The weather has very unpredictable lately. One minute it’s raining, the next hour it’s sunny and warm. And if you didn’t know, Philo is out on vacation. And I am out on a back injury. I will be coming back soon, next week hopefully.

As I have said before, this is a community where we work together every week to have an opportunity for us to all hoop together. The sound system DOES NOT magically appear every weekend. And the events are not magically scheduled every day of the week. There is an actual human being doing this work.

Usually the person who is leading needs to bring hoops(and extra hoops) and a sound system. They will almost always be coming in a CAR. They will need to park that CAR somehow and somewhere. And parking the car is not always easy, depending on where we are hooping for that day. Most likely the leader will want to drop off the hoops and sound system and then park their car. So, there usually needs to be an extra someone there to help unload the hoops and sound system and watch those items while the leader parks his car. This is particularly true of locations like Dolores Park and Hayes Green.

So it would be nice for some of you to show some effort in maintaining this group and showing some compassion for each and every member. It may be helping me, Philo, or any other leaders carry the sound system and hula hoops to and from the car. Or it may simply be offering help to another member. The three things you need when hooping at an event is music, some hoops, and yourself. There’s not much to a hoop gathering. We don’t need to make it more complicated than it is. It IS ok to communicate utmost each other when things turn and change. It is OK to take an initiative to go and help out one another.

I’d like to thank the few people who gathered at Dolores park today without any of our usual leaders and sound system. You guys did the right thing and I like to see more of you working in similar ways, as a group, as a team, as a community.

As it stand today we have 512 members on Tribe.net. 563 members on our BAH Yahoo groups. And 170 members on Facebook. The forums on Tribe, Facebook, and Yahoo are all open. Learn to listen. Don’t be afraid of each other. We’d like to keep seeing your smiling faces! So don’t give up now! See you guys soon.

Best Regards,

Tiger

It started raining hard tonight at around 12 midnight. The ground is very wet right now. And with thunderstorms coming tomarrow morning, I have decided to cancel this weekend's meetup again.

I'll be heading to my local gym to do some hooping instead.

Stay positive. And keep hooping!

Hey everyone. From the conversations going on in the Fire-PSIde tribe, it seems as though we might be fire and PSI hooping it up in Golden Gate Park this Friday. Can anyone confirm that this is actually happening? If so, it should be advertised on here. The discussion is at http://tribes.tribe.net/fire-pside/thread/bebf21ef-301e-4d87-a668-b60885dadd9f

Hello hoopers,

My apologies for posting a late response to last week's cancellation. I checked the weather and it says it is going to rain this Sunday, but only in the AM hours. Well I no longer want to let the rain stop this group from hooping outdoors. So this weekend, Steve Drew and I will be there with the music. I am recovering from a car accident and most likely will be doing some hoop isolations at most and bringing some music.

We will be hooping at Dolores park by the palm trees between 19th and 20th.

Happy first day of Spring. See you all there in the hoop!

MARCH HOOPING CALENDAR/NEWSLETTER

Hello Hoopers!

February was quite the washout with all that rain on Sunday afternoons, but we did have one totally amazingly hot day out there that was mind bogglingly delicious, so here's to some more of that happening in March! After all, we leave Winter behind this month and move into Spring!

GET INVOLVED! While I've been IN town for quite some time on Sundays, starting mid-month I'm going to be out of town on weekends for five weeks which means there are great opportunities to be of service to Bay Area Hoopers on 3/15, 3/22, 3/29, 4/5 and 4/12. Please let me know if you are able to host one or more of these dates. What's required is for you to show up for the full two hours, try and be aware of new hoopers and introducing them to a few people, bring the sound system and help with any transitions of it (it's super easy to handle and on wheels now!), and that you (or someone else) has an ipod with some hoop sounds to share. Get involved and be a part of! Please let me know!

Here's our hooping calendar for March:

Sunday, March 1st: SAN FRANCISCO CIVIC CENTER: From 2 to 4 pm we'll be meeting across the street from City Hall, specifically on Polk Street between Grove and McCallister for those of you who haven't joined us there before. The weather report right now calls for a lot of rain on Saturday, and for Sunday to be clear. The Civic Center is a great spot this time of year because it dries out better than just about anywhere and even if the grass is all wet there's still plenty of space to hoop.

Sunday, March 15nd: HAYES/OCTAVIA GREEN - From 2 to 4 pm on Octavia between Fell and Hayes in San Francisco.

Sunday, March 22th: DOLORES PARK - It's Spring! Come celebrate Springtime from 2 to 4pm on the Dolores Street side of the park, typically by the palm trees between 19th and 20th.

Sunday, March 29th: PANHANDLE - Bay Area Hoopers hosts our regular 2-4pm Sunday hoop jam at the end of The Panhandle, specifically Baker Street between Oak and Fell at the statue.

Be sure to check in with your inbox prior to heading out in the event any of our hoopjams are cancelled due to weather.

See you all at some point this month!

SPINcerely yours,

I'm new to the area, I moved here from Boston a couple weeks ago, and I haven't gotten my fire hoop out here yet. I wanted to perform Saturday night, and was wondering if anyone would be interested in letting me use their hoop and come to a great party too! We could both perform, it's a variety show and should be a really good time! There should be between 100-150 people.

Our Weekend Events Cancelled - Rain Rain Rain!!!

Hey Hoopers -

Apologies for the short notice, but most of you know I work nights and I just woke up.

Tonight we had two events scheduled, the bay area hoopers non-hooping hoopers social potluck, followed by fire hooping in golden gate park. It's currently raining and looks like it's going to continue tonight, on top of it being muddy and very cold. I know it's short notice, but I'm going to cancel both of these events and I look forward to rescheduling them soon. Apologies for any inconvenience.

Looking through the weekend we have rain today, tonight, tomorrow, tommorrow night, sunday..,. Consequently I'm putting the early word out that hooping on Sunday is cancelled.

Can't wait to get together with you soon and hoop. I might even try and toss out a short notice mid-week something if the weather improves. I don't want to go too long without hooping. I love hooping!

Hope you all have a great weekend.
