Wow, What an great evening of hooping!!!! Thanks so much for bringing the music and sharing your fire and psi hoops. I learned a lot about the different types of fire and psi hoops; very helpful in making a decision on what to buy. The Aids Memorial Grove in GGPark is a beautiful space to spin.
Cheers,

7/6 Hooping Locale: McNear’s Beach in San Rafael

Hello Hoopers!

Hooping this Sunday our Holiday Hooping takes us to Marin at McNear's Beach in San Rafael, with Steve Drew as our host.

The Details:

Sunday, July 6th Party hosted by Catherine and Joan
2pm – dusk
McNear’s Beach in San Rafael
Party location is to the far left of parking lot – past the pool and tennis courts
Please note: no dogs allowed

Bring food to share, sunblock, friends, family, and instruments you might want to play (including your dancing bodies!) Catherine and Joan will have ice to cool your drinks down, plates, napkins, cups, etc., and the band!

TANDAMANZI will play the afternoon away. Tandamanzi Rhythm Ensemble is an uplifting fusion of djembes, djun djuns, congas, didgeridoo, balaphone, percussion, and boisterous fun! Their infectiously energetic blend of African rhythms and funky dance grooves compels audiences to get up and move.

From Highway 101:
· take the Central San Rafael exit and go EAST on Second Street (which becomes San Pedro Road ) to Cantera Way .
· Note: there is a fee for parking ($8/car) and a separate fee for the pool. We suggest that you carpool or meet outside the park entrance since the parking fee is per car, not per person. If you want to swim, bring your suits and pay at the entrance. Caution: Lot’s of kids in the pool.

If anyone is available to give rides to others, post it here!

Have a good Holiday Weekend!

Need Supplies...Hoops for Camp

Howdy,

I go to a family camp every year in Mendocino area. The camp is the first week of August. I would love to this year bring up a bunch of un-decorated hoops and a bunch of tape and make it a shared activity to deco and play with the hoops. I'm thinking I'd want to bring about 25 hoops of varying size (there will be both kids and adults there).

My questions to you good people.

1. Do I have enough time to order supplies and receive them before the 1st of August in San Francisco?
2. The camp is in the redwoods and I'd hate to leave toxic plastic shavings and sandings all around there...can (should) I pre-cut and pre-sand the hoops? I'd prefer to actually put them together up there, I think (because that much tubing has got to be easier to transport laying flat). If I wasn't worried about toxicity, I'd just leave the tubing in coils until I got up there.
3. How much tape am I gonna need for 25 hoops? I know there's a lot of variation in the amount people use to deco, but let's say just basic spiral coverage of basic (42 to 36 inch) hoops made with 3/4" tubing.

Thanks in advance for your expertise. I'm sure I could learn all about this through trial and error...but I don't have a lot of time to gain the experience before I have to place the orders for these supplies.

July 6th Dance & Hoop Party

Hey Fellow Hoopers,
My good friend Catherine is hosting an outdoor potluck party and dance at McNear’s Beach July 6th and she’s invited me to invite my hoop peeps to join the fun. I haven’t heard the band before but should be fun to hoop to some live drum jamm’n. Details below. Hope to see you there. If you have friends in the East and North Bay Hoop Tribes, pass the word. –s--

Catherine and Joan invite you to a dance-food-sun-fun afternoon!
Sunday
July 6th
2pm – dusk (plenty of extra hoop time after BAH event)
McNear’s Beach in San Rafael
Party spot is to the far left of parking lot – past the pool and tennis courts

• take the Central San Rafael exit and go EAST on Second Street (which becomes San Pedro Road ) to Cantera Way .
• Note: there is a fee for parking ($8/car) and a separate fee for the pool. We suggest that you carpool or meet outside the park entrance since the parking fee is per car, not per person. If you want to swim, bring your suits and pay at the entrance. Caution: Lot’s of kids in the pool.

Can you share hoop-making supplies? I'll pay!! (or bake, your choice)

Hi,

I very recently got interested in hooping (so recently in fact, that I do not own a hoop yet). I wanted to make a couple so I can practice. I was hoping that I could split costs with someone also looking to make hoops or buy supplies from someone who has extra on hand.

If you have extra supplies lying around that you could sell to me --- pipe, decorative tape, connectors --- that will make 1 or 2 hoops, let me know. If you have a pipe cutter that you'd be willing to briefly loan out (hey, I could cut everything when I'm buying the pipe from you, so it'd never leave your home), let me know.

If you have no supplies to sell, but want to purchase them in bulk and split the costs with me, let me know as well :)

Cheers,
Maria

P.S. If you have hoops that you just want to sell/give away, talk to me as well.

Sunday 6/22 Hooping Locale

Hello Hoopers!

This Sunday from 2-4 pm we will be Hooping at a big event: The Big ONE Convergence that is happening this weekend in Golden Gate Park, Sharon Meadow. Miss Rosie has arranged to have hooping be among the activities taking place. Sharon Meadow is located next to the Childrens playground and carousel, Close to the Haight St entrance to the Park. Our hooping will take place from 2-4 on Sunday although the event is on June 21& 22, from 9am-7pm.

Here's the description of the event:

The Big ONE "village of engagement" is a gathering of people from Bay Area neighborhoods, schools, coops, nonprofits, foundations, businesses, and municipal agencies. Participants will design, envision, collaborate, and dialog with new friends about the future of their neighborhoods and communities.

Prepare for the challenging times ahead; come, be heard, and engage. You can set up a table or an interactive exhibit to collaborate and share information and/or do a workshop, presentation, forum, art project, or hands-on demonstration of sustainable skills. We provide the space – a large grassy area with open-air tents, a media tent, and a stage for music encircling a larger gathering tent for food and socializing.
Fill the space with your dreams.

This is a 100% noncommercial event; nothing will be for sale. Bring picnic food and drink, plates, cups, and utensils for an enormous zero-waste potluck. We will have storytellers and games, and an eclectic mix of live music will be performed throughout each day.

The Big ONE movement represents a tectonic shift in thinking toward sustainability awareness and action, civic engagement, and localization of culture, economy, and decision-making. Based on respect for all life and the planet that sustains us, the gathering provides opportunities to build community through dialogue, committed engagement, and trust.

Here's the official website: http://www.beautifulcommunities.org/

Also, if you want to keep hooping afterwards, the Sunset Party is happening in McLaren Park on Sunday from 12-7pm. For more info, go to http://pacificsound.net/events/index.html

See you on Sunday! --Allison

Unfortunately, I can't make the Sunday BAH gathering this Sunday. I'll be in Sacto with my BMan campmates doing some planning and heavy lifting, lots of eating and splashing around in the pool. I was planning on checking out the Big ONE Convergence that is happening this weekend in Golden Gate Park on Saturday. Anyone up for meeting up in the park Saturday, let me know.

New classes are starting for the summer! This time on Saturday afternoons, from 1:00 pm – 2:30 pm. That will be 6 weeks, beginning Saturday 6/28 and running through 8/9 (excluding 7/19). Once again held in the ever popular Bernal Park in San Jose, located at 7th Street and Hedding, where there is plenty of parking and nearby public transportation.

I know summer weekends are busy, so don't worry if you have to miss a class or two. A half hour before every class I will be available to go through what you may have missed on a previous week, or to help you with any questions/problems you have.

This Sunday June 8th, we will be hooping from 2-4 in the Panhandle (specifically Baker St between Oak & Fell by the McKinley statue). We will be just off the beaten path of the Haight Ashbury Street Fair taking place that day for those who are interested in attending the event. Hope to see you there!

(you are right, Hiya, I should post this in more than just South Bay Hoopers tribe!)

There is an interactive sculpture at the Children's Discovery Museum, and since it is on a nice big lawn area and you have to drum on drum pads to make it work - it just begs for hooping! Feel free to join us this Sunday (6/8/08) starting around 7pm with hoops and and other spinny objects.

The sculpture (a zoetrope - Peter Hudson's Homouroboros on loan from Burning Man) is at Discovery Park, at the corner of San Carlos Street and Woz Way. For more information: http://www.blackrockarts.org/projects/homouroboros

hey, hoopers and dancers -

Miss Rosie will be teaching at NCDC Summer Dance Camp! Here's a link to a video on YouTube made by some SoCal dance camp fans. Check it out, and then register to come to camp! The dates this year are June 13-22. It's 9 days of heaven, like living in a village of dancers, with great vegetarian meals, Kids Camp for the little ones, and an amazing community of people. Prices go up after June 1, so you save money if you register sooner rather than later. You can also check http://ncdcdances.org/ for lots of info and photos from previous camps.

be well,

Somehow we are having trouble with the connectors. the 3/4" ones we bought don't fit at all. The hardware stores by my house don't seem to have the right kind either. Can someone point us in the right direction? There must be a simple solution for this out there.

Hello Hoopers!

It's time we do some hooping in the East Bay. This Sunday from 2-4pm we will be at Mosswood Park in Oakland. It is very close to the MacArthur bart station. I hope to see you there, if you can make it out to the East Bay!

Here are the directions:

Mosswood Park, Oakland
Corner of MacArthur and Broadway, right by Kaiser/Oakland and the Sawmill.
From Buses:
51 and 57 stop at the park
From BART:
At MacArthur Station, walk up MacArthur to park (5-10 minute walk)
From SF/S Bay:
After Bay Bridge, take 580 towards Hayward. Get in left lane immediately! Take first left exit, which is MacArthur. Follow MacArthur on the right to Mosswood. Turn right on Webster and circle around back for parking.
From East Bay:
Take Shattuck or Telegraph south to MacArthur. Left onto MacArthur. Turn right on street before Broadway (Webster) if possible, as there is street and park parking there.

Hello Hoopers!

Send some love to your Mother and come out and hoop with us in Esprit Park from 2-4pm this Sunday! Those of you who have attended Decompression in the past will be familiar with the area. It's a great spot for hooping, better weather, lots of lawn, picnic tables, with pretty huge redwoods surrounding the park that are rather stunning. Esprit Park is located between 20th and 22nd Streets and Indiana and Tennessee Streets in San Francisco. Close to the T-Third light rail line. (For some reason, a search on Google maps doesn't show Esprit Park itself, but you will get a marked location for the Esprit Park Home Owners Association. Its basically the same spot).

Hope to see you there! --Allison

Hooping Locale for 5/4: How Weird & Dance Week!

Hello Hoopers!

Theres a lot going on this Sunday! So we actuallly have two events: The How Weird Street Fair, and Hooping as part of Bay Area National Dance Week. Normally we wouldn't have conflicting events, but arrangements were made months ago to be part of dance week (it's listed in all of their materials) and in the past hoopers have always attended How Weird. So these are your hooping options (although technically you could do both):

5/4 National Dance Week Hooping Location: The Panhandle (specifically next to the McKinley statue, on Baker St between Oak & Fell)
2-4pm. This is the final day of the 2008 National Dance Week. Description from their listing:
Join the Bay Area Hoopers and HoopGirl.com for an exciting community dance event with hoops! All ages and abilities welcome. Hoops provided. As featured on the front cover of the San Francisco Chronicle!

5/4 The 9th Annual How Weird Street Faire 11:11am-5:55pm. NOTE THE NEW LOCATION THIS YEAR!: Howard and 2nd St. This event is for all ages. Requested donation of $10 or $5 if in "costume". For all the info go to http://www.howweird.org/
Since this event is large and goes on all day, it may be a good idea to pick a time/stage to meet up at. Post you suggestions & plans here!

Have fun hooping wherever it may be!
Oh and if anyone knows of a good 1 or 2 bedroom place in the Berkeley area coming available in the next couple of months, let me know!

I have 2 dogs and 3 cats...yikes!...that's what makes finding a place the hardest...wish me luck!

Hello Hoopers!

I've been in search of this album for my own personal hoop sounds, a compilation called History Part 2: The Rough and the Smooth. They have it on Amazon for a whopping $75. Does anyone already have this on their laptops who could burn me a copy? I'd be most appreciative and could even give you the blank cd!

Thanks! ---Allison

Wondering if my fellow hoopers can give me the spin down on hooping events / parties / gatherings at BMan this year. I know it may be a bit early to know all, but , for example, is there a typical day and time for hooping at the Deep End? My camp is already planning a bunch of activities and I want to make sure I leave plenty of Playa hoop time open this year. Appreciate your input. Cheers --s--

Hello Hoopers!

Thanks to all those who came out for our first time outdoors last week! This Sunday 4/20 we will be hooping at Civic Center from 2-4pm. Specifically the grassy area between Polk & Larkin. For those of you attending the Hoop Path, we're going to linger a bit so come by after and show off what you've learned!

Hope to see you outside then!

What's up San Fran?!

I can't wait to get and chill with you guys. I've been looking forward to coming back since moment I got on the plane to come home last time. I'm hoping that there will be some hoop events happening while I'm out there (other than my workshops) so we can get our hoop groove on. I love all the hoop communities that I have been blessed to visit, but SF is special because the Community is so large and talented there. It's an honor to be able to come to such a hotbed and have so many participants in my classes. I wish there was more room for my third day workshop, but the studio is pretty tiny on Monday night. Last time I came out to SF, I had just begun teaching "First Steps" and I taught "Warrior Path" for the first time EVER out there. I've restructured things a little since last time. I really excited about the 2 and 3 day structure. It gives us more time to get into different techniques and methods. I'm really looking forward to teaching Day 2 in SF. Those techniques are some of my faves. I know a lot of those who are coming this time came last time. I'm excited to get some feedback from everyone.

So one of my little hoop dreams is to come and hoop with you guys on what I believe is one of the oldest weekly hoop jams in the Community: The BAH hoop jam. Our workshop is going to get out at 4 on Sunday, so I'm going to see if I can get some peeps from our workshop to come over with me to the Jam. I know it will be winding down, but even a couple of minutes and introductions would be cool. We are going to be in SOMA (?). Is the Jam anywhere near there? Is this plan totally unrealistic given traffic and stuff? I hope we can work this out.

Let me know if you have any specific questions about the workshops.
See you soon!

Hello Hoopers!

For the first time this season BAH will officially be moving out into the sunshine! And this weekend the weather is supposed to be beautiful! For this outdoor phase, our meetups will be from 2-4pm. Our location this Sunday will be at our familiar stomping ground of Dolores Park. Specifically the Southeast corner by Dolores St and 20th St (unless something else is already in that spot.) Just look for the hoops! Since this Sunday is truly an event, the color to celebrate this kickoff will be RED. As in please wear something red when you come out to hoop! I hope to see many from our amazing hoop community on the 13th!

Hello Hoopers!

This Sunday we're going on Hiatus before we officially kick off the outdoor hooping season. Our founder Philo is currently out of town, and would really like to be present for the official start of Bay Area Hoopers move back to the parks of the San Francisco and the East Bay. So we will take this brief pause, and get geared up for a big opening jam on Sunday April 13 at a fabulous to-be-decided location.

See you on the 13th!

I am new to hooping and have been looking around for a god hoop that I can travel with. (I don't mind getting the tapes and covering it myself, especially since I have not seen one that jumps out at me yet...)

I saw this hoop:

https://www.flammaaeterna.com/p-960-flamma-aeterna-bare-bones-collapsible-practice-hoop.aspx

What are your thoughts on it? Are there others that you prefer?

Also, are there any DVD's that you prefer over others (or ones that I should stay away from)? I travel a lot so a DVD is probably the best way for me to go. (I do come from a strong dance background so I am hoping this is realistic...)

Thoughts?

Just want to post a special thank you to Alison, Philo, and Antonio for pulling together a great hoop space for us this winter. While I look forward to begin hooping outdoors together, part of me will miss the intimacy and comaraderie that Cellspace encourage and supported. I've met a lot of great BAH folks at Cellspace the past several months and you've all made me feel very welcome. Thanks to you all and I look forward to hooping with you in the parks. Cheers, --s--

Hello Hoopers!

Just like the forces of nature, the flowers bloom, birds sing, life begins again the
cycle continues. It's time to leave our winter home and migrate to the outside of warm
blue skies, and lazy days....But not until we have our last hooping session!

We will be meeting this Sunday for the last day indoors at Cellspace from 3-5pm.
Cellspace is located at 2050 Bryant St. (between 18th & 19th). As always, bring a few
dollars to cover space rental.

Please bring your iPods, we will be rotating music. Punch and cookies will be supplied or
something equivalent for our nourishment.

Also i want to give a special thanks to Beth, from North Carolina for joining us and
being part of our community. This woman can hoop! inspiration to boot.
http://people.tribe.net/bethanderica

i'll be hosting this weekend, hoop to see you there!
-Antonio

Caution this session will be filmed and documented.

Registration Links to HoopPath Workshops in California 4/12-4/21

Howdy!

We've finally got these registration links a-goin' for all our California workshops next month. We will present the following workshops:

Saturday April 12th and Sunday April 13th: HoopPath Santa Cruz
Monday April 14th: HoopPath Intensive, Santa Cruz
Wednesday April 16th: HoopPath LA
Thursday April 17th: HoopPath Ojai
Saturday April 19th and Sunday April 20th: HoopPath San Francisco
Monday April 21st: HoopPath Intensive, San Francisco

Things to bear in mind: All of the workshops except for the two intensives are suitable for hoopers of ANY SKILL LEVEL, total beginners and hoop professionals alike. Because the HoopPath is a unique approach with its own language and specific imagery that we share and learn from together, even a highly advanced hooper will need to become familiar with our terms and concepts to be able to fully benefit from the exercises.

The workshops will all be quite rigorous. You will need to pace yourself, particularly if you are a beginning hooper, and please remember to bring some water to stay refreshed and hydrated. We do a lot of talkin', but we do a LOT of hoopin' too!

Finally, in Santa Cruz and San Francisco, the Saturday-Sunday workshops are a prerequisite for the Monday intensives.

Even though I seem to have gotten caught in some kind of yokel persona above (yee-haw!) I can still answer any of your questions if you write to me here or at ann@hooppath.com

Here's the links! All of 'em!

Hey folks, some friends of mine are putting on a party this Saturday, the 29th to raise money for a good cause. There probably won't be room on the floor to hoop, but the organizer, Ro, is very open to performers who might want to volunteer their time for a set or two to raise money for the San Francisco Aids Foundation. You can contact Ro at Valiao.ro@gmail.com. I might pop in for some dancing myself so perhaps I'll see some of y'all there.

Hooping Video Channel now on Vimeo

Howdy happy hoopers!

How ya feeling today? So over in the hooping videos tribe we had a discussion about vimeo - a video sharing site. http://tribes.tribe.net/hoopingvideos/thread/48766ad5-4396-469a-8f72-1a038a5374f7

It's a wonderful site. So I've created a new channel on vimeo for hooping videos. Right now I'll be moderating if but if anyone wants to moderate it just let me know! Hoop hoop away!

www.vimeo.com/channel6649

So if you want your hooping video on the channel you can add a link in the "Shout Out" box on the right hand side of the page.

Hooray! I can't wait to see all the crazy fun hooping videos to come!

1-love,

Hey Hoopers - for those of you who don't know, I have a paranormal investigation service and I'm posting this here on the off chance that there might be something funky going on in your home - or you might know someone who is having a situation. A friend that I went through psychic school with years ago and I decided to join forces on this and it's been going really well. We're doing this for fun and free for now too. You can read more about what we're up to at www.sfparnormal.org if you're interested.

The month of March will be our last at Cellspace for the season. After that we will go back to hooping outdoors. For those who have just joined us this winter, we hoop at a different park every week during the rest of the year-- we also have our own sound system!

Also, we have a "piggy bank" from the extra money collected from space rental (I can give an exact amount later.) Philo has proposed that this go towards eventually replacing one (or both) of our speakers since one is broken in the back. How does everyone feel about this?

Come hoop with mirrors while you still can!

hey friends,

i had a chance to meet a bunch of you last spring after philo made me a fly green hoop and hooked me up with the sunday afternoon scene. not long after, i moved overseas for work and took my hoop with me (yes i paid the extra cargo fee with british airways to take that huge thang!) but just could not bring it back when i returned. i need a new hoop to get me back in the scene but cannot deal with the do-it-myself factor right now. i poked around on the hooping site to try and find a hoopmaker but couldn't tell exactly who was local and who was not. is there a list of makers?

thanks!

OJAI:

hey guys, I just wanted to thank y'all for making me feel welcome at my first BAH hoopjam today at Cell Space. I met lots of people and had a blast. Unfortunately, since I live in Sacramento, I won't be able to come every week. But I am hoping to come maybe 1-2 times a month and plan my SF day trips around it...gives me an excuse to get into SF...yay!

I didn't catch a lot of your names, so please feel free to add me on here! See ya guys around! Thanks again!

Getting a jump on Maker Faire 2008

I just got off the phone with the good folks from O'Reilly Media. They put on the Maker Faire every year (see http://makerfaire.com/ ). The Maker Faire is all about getting people to play more. Seriously...its great for DIY geeks, but its also good for parents and kids and anybody who gets a charge out of making things and then playing with them.

Last year I tried to connect them to SF Bay Area Hoopers because I think hooping is a natural for Maker Faire (and because you good people are so open and into sharing and all), but I had this brainstorm a little too late in the game :-(. They've subsequently done a small Maker Faire in Austin, TX and there were some hoopers there...and it was a HUGE hit. So...they would love to have hooper presence at the Maker Faire.

Here's what I'm thinking...

Maker Faire runs over an the weekend of May 3rd and 4th this year (at the San Mateo County Fairgrounds...easy access from CalTrain).

I would love to organize a weekend-long hooping party, complete with music, performances, group hooping, hoop making, maybe some informal classes once in a while? The Maker Faire folks can bulk-purchase the materials for the "how to make" part. In Austin, they noticed that even red-necked Dads were willing to get down on the grass with their kids to make a hoop, btw...how sweet is THAT? And they would love the fancy clothes that some of you wear when you're doing the hoop thang (especially if they're handmade).

Maker Faire is really fun to visit, and we can arrange free or low-cost admission for anybody who comes in from SF Bay Area Hoopers. Also, if somebody brings a good sound system down it will be secure over the weekend (people bring in really expensive pieces of equipment for this thing like lasers and fancy computers and stuff..so there's good security).

If either of the hooping companies from the Bay Area wanted to set up some retail space, I'm sure it could be arranged (not everybody is gonna want to make their own hoop...and there will be some folks who really want pink pants or really want a DVD, I'm guessing).

So...is anybody up for this? Feel free to PM me too if you have questions.

Please check it out. I've scanned a picture in the photo section of Claudia.

Among the categories is "hoop group of the year" for which Bay Area Hoopers was nominated. Theres also local and international talent to vote on from fire hooper to getting hooping out to a larger audience. You've got until 9pm on Friday to cast your ballot!

As much as I try to block out the hours to get to the Sunday meetups in SF I can't. Hr travel there, 2hrs there and 1 hr travel home wipes out my Sunday.
